U R Boss

Young people are the experts in their own experiences, but young people in the criminal justice system often get ignored, left out or silenced. U R Boss supported young people in the criminal justice system to secure their legal rights and to have an impact on policy, practice and the services that affect them.

Young adults project

In July 2014 we began exploring the issue of maturity and young adulthood with young people in the criminal justice system. We did this on behalf of the Transition to Adulthood Alliance and with support from the Barrow Cardbury Trust. Read more here.

U R Boss was part of the Howard League for Penal Reform. The Howard League for Penal Reform is a charity that campaigns for less crime, safer communities and fewer people in prison. We want to change the criminal justice system, stop children and young people going into custody and to make sure they get the help and support they need.

The Big Lottery Fund - 2015

The Howard League for Penal Reform is delighted to have received a national grant from the Big Lottery Fund and its Reaching Communities programme. A grant for £450,000 has been awarded to the charity over a three-year period, supporting the legal advice and youth participation work that the Howard League offers to children and young people in the criminal justice system.

The Big Lottery Fund has previously supported the Howard League’s U R Boss project, a five-year programme which offered youth participation opportunities and an enhanced legal service to children and young people across England. The new programme of work started in Spring 2015.

Final evaluation

An external team of evaluators led by the Centre for Social Action at De Montfort University was commissioned to evaluate U R Boss. The final evaluation report, and this young people's summary, presents the work and achievements of U R Boss, and lessons to be learnt for future developments.
